Day 10: Kinloch Rannoch to Edinburgh
Day 10 7/5/17
It was a nice calm morning at the resort, very beautiful and calm. it really made you appreciate nature verses city life.
We left our hotel and traveled north for a tour of the Dalwhinnie whiskey distillery. We split up into two groups and took tours of the facility. They did a good job explaining the process of how their whiskey is made.
At the end of the tour, two samples were given for the tour members to try. Capri suns were given to the students who were underage.
We left the highlands to go towards Edinburgh. We stopped at Pitlochry for lunch and to take a look around. I tried the haggis meal, keeping up with the tradition of trying the cultural foods.
We exchanged money and had ice cream before getting back on the bus to continue. We stopped at Stirling Castle. We actually arrived at a good time, as the Queen of England was just leaving the castle. We got up towards the entrance and waited while a police escort complete with motorcycles was getting ready to depart.
Once the motorcycles started, they were followed by 3 cars, one of them with the Queen and the Prince of Edinburgh! We were really lucky that we could be that close to them.
Once they left and things settled down, we got into the castle and looked around for a couple of hours. the castle has been restored back to the times that Scottish kings and queens were crowned, around the 1500's. Different parts of the castle were on display and there was a museum for the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders regiments, which used the castle as a headquarters before it was restored.
We left the castle and headed for Edinburgh. We were dropped off at our restaurant for an Angus meat meal with peas and beans. A bagpiper dressed in full regalia came in and played a few songs for all to hear. Of course, pictures had to be taken.
The dessert was a tasty confection similar to a strawberry short cake without the cake.
We got back on the bus and arrived at the Ibis Budge hotel near the airport. We were surprised at how small the rooms were. Some had showers in the same area as their bed. Space was at a premium.
We settled down, relaxed, and made the best of it.
